Filters
Use filters to support uniform modeling and accelerated evaluation for each tenant. Filters ensure that users see only the information and methods that are relevant to them. Users only have access to a subset of ARIS Method that is contained in the method filter assigned to each user or user group. If users create models, for example, only the model types relevant to their work are offered for selection. Users can use only the objects, symbols, attributes, models, and connections permitted in the model.
If you have the Admin role and Configuration administration function privilege, you can manage filters of a tenant.
Do not customize standard filters, but create copies instead. Please note that any changes to standard filters will be overwritten and lost during an update.
There are two types of filters:
Method filters
A method filter contains a subset of ARIS Method, which the configuration administrator can define for specific users and user groups, or for a specific task. To have access to user-defined method extensions, you must assign the extensions to a filter. When modeling, all object, connection, and attribute types are available for the model type that are contained in the method filter. Thus, the content offered to users is exactly the content they need to perform their tasks.
Evaluation filters
An evaluation filter reduces the number of database elements to be analyzed. For example, when you run a report, you can restrict the method content for evaluation by using an evaluation filter. The method content is restricted to the content that is activated in both the method filter you used when logging in to the database and the evaluation filter you selected. The advantage of evaluation filters is that the running time of a report is reduced and that only relevant content is included in comprehensive processes.
On the Filters page, you can find all filters that are available to users of this tenant. You can modify filter settings any time if required.
You can do the following:
You can quickly create filters based on a database that already contains the method contents you require. In this way, you create project-specific filters, for example, based on similar prior projects. You can then edit the filters and modify them to match project-specific requirements.
Click
Application launcher >
Administration.
Click Conventions > Filters.
Next to
Create filter, click
Menu > Generate from database.
Select the database that contains the required content.
Select the method filter to log into that database. Make sure that this filter contains the required method content. If you are not sure about the filter, use the Entire method filter. In this case, all items are included but only the items used in the database are added to the new filter.
Click Generate filter.
The filter is created. It contains all method content of the combined filters.
To modify the filter to match specific requirements and to translate the filter name and description in multiple languages, click Edit filter to manually modify the filter settings.
You can combine filters quickly based on your existing filters by merging them. In this way, you create project-specific filters, for example, based on similar prior projects. You can then edit the filters and modify them to match project-specific requirements.
Click
Application launcher >
Administration.
Click Conventions > Filters.
Next to
Create filter, click
Menu > Merge filters.
Select the filters that contain the required method items.
Click Generate filter.
All attributes are displayed in the language with which you logged in.
Select all configuration languages that you use on this tenant.
Enter the Name and Description. You cannot edit the GUID that is set by the system.
Warning
You must enter all values in each language. If you do not enter the name and description in a language, users who log in with this language will not be able to find this filter because (Untitled) is displayed as the filter name.
Select the kind of filter that the filter is to be used for. You can select Method filter or Evaluation filter.
Select a metamodel if required. If you enable UML 2.5, all contained elements are permitted by the filter. Users can create UML diagrams using this filter.
Click Apply.
The filter is created. It contains all method content of the combined filters.
You can import filters from filter export files (.filter). These files are automatically created when you export a filter.
Click
Application launcher >
Administration.
Click Conventions > Filters.
Click
Import, select or drop the filter export file, and click Import.
Warning
If a filter with the same GUID already exists in a tenant, the current filter will be overwritten. To prevent overwriting a filter, first duplicate the current filter and then import the older version of the filter.
To overwrite an existing filter, click Overwrite filter.
The filter is imported.
Assign the filter to users or user groups.
You can assign method filters to users or user groups, to grant access only to a specific subset of ARIS Method. Filters ensure that users see only the information and methods that are relevant to them.
Click
Application launcher >
Administration.
Click
Databases.
Select the database and click
Properties >
Method filters.
Click User groups or Users.
Select the user groups or users to which you want to assign filters. The available method filters are displayed.
Enable the required method filters.
If you selected Users, you can see the filters that are individually assigned to the user, the filters the user inherited from the user groups, and the sum of filters the user has.
The users or user group members can use all method items contained in the filters assigned.
You can either change the name of a filter in the current language or you can change the names and descriptions in multiple languages.
Click
Application launcher >
Administration.
Click Conventions > Filters.
Select the name that you want to change.
Click
Rename to change the name in the current language. To change the name and description in multiple languages, click
Edit, select the languages, and overwrite the current name or description in each language as required.
To confirm the changes, in the Rename dialog click Save or in the Edit dialog click Apply.
The filter is listed with its new name.
You can modify a filter using the content of a database, merging filter content, or manually modify multiple filter settings.
Click
Application launcher >
Administration.
Click Conventions > Filters.
Click the filter that you want to update. You cannot modify the content of the Entire method filter, which automatically contains all method items available on the related tenant.
Click
Edit filter. You can change the filter name and description in multiple language or modify filter settings.
After you completed the action, click Apply.
If you want to update the filter using the content of a database and a related method filter, click
Edit filter > Based on database.
Select the database that contains the required method items to be made available in the updated filter.
Select the method filter that additionally reduces the number of method items available in this database. Make sure that you do not select a newly created method filter that does not have any content yet. If you do so, the updated method filter will be empty as well.
If you want to delete the current content of the filter and replace it by the method items used in the database, enable the Overwrite filter with database content check box. If you disable the check box, the filter content remains and the method items used in the database are added.
If you want to update the filter merging multiple filters, click
Edit filter > Merge filters.
You can combine filters quickly based on your existing filters by merging them. In this way, you update an existing filter by merging the contents of other filters into it.
You can then edit the filters and modify them to match project-specific requirements.
Click
Application launcher >
Administration.
Configuration is displayed.Click Conventions.
Click Filters.
Select a filter.
Next to
Edit filter, click
Merge filters.
Select the filters that contain the required method items.
Click Merge filters.
The filter is updated.
Duplicate filters for easy modification. A duplicated filter is an exact copy of a filter but it has a new GUID. If you import a filter that already exists on a tenant, make sure to duplicate the current filter first. This protects the existing filter from being overwritten by an import, because the duplicate has a new GUID.
Click
Application launcher >
Administration.
Click Conventions > Filters.
Select the filter that you want to duplicate.
Click
Duplicate. The filter is created using the name of the source extended by a number.
Change the name and description in each language so that all users can read the text in the language they prefer. You can also change the content of the filter if required.
Click Apply.
The filter is created. It contains all method content of the combined filters.
You can back up filters to filter export files (.filter). Use the files to deliver all contained method extensions from one tenant to another or to overwrite the current content of a related filter.
Click
Application launcher >
Administration.
Click Conventions > Filters.
Select the filter that you want to save and click
Export.
The file is saved according to the settings specified in your browser.
You can use the filter back up file to import the filter to another tenant or to restore a filter.
You can delete filters that users should no longer use. If you export filters first, you can make deleted filters available again.
Click
Application launcher >
Administration.
Click Conventions > Filters.
Select the filter and click
Delete.
To confirm the action, click Delete.
The filter is no longer available.
You can start various filter-related reports, for example, to compare filters or to get detailed information about contained items.
Click
Application launcher >
Administration.
